The artist was born in 1953 on Lesquiti Island, BC to a German mother and a Coast Salish father. His family moved to the Capilano Indian Reserve on Vancouver Island when he was 8 years old. He began carving at the age of 15, working in Kwakwaka’wakw style.

He moved to Victoria for four years to study and carve with the large number of masterful Kwakwaka’wakw artists living in the area.

The native art movement at that time focused on researching, studying and translating the essential stylistic attributes of the historical artists. The artists’ work transformed those elements forward into a contemporary personal style that honored the past, present and future.

The artist returned to Vancouver Island and is carving now on a full-time basis. He continues to carve in the Kwakwaka’wakw style, and explores carving traditions of Salish, Kwakiutl and Tlingit cultures in tandem with his wife, who herself is a highly accomplished Coast Salish artist. His work, and their collaborative pieces are widely collected.

He has now been carving for over 40 years and is widely regarded as one of a handful of elite Coast Salish artists.

The transformer and the creator, Raven placed the sun and moon in the sky so the world would have light and also put the trees on land and fish in water. This magical creature opened the clamshell to release man. He is known for his knowledge and complex teachings with some mischief thrown in.
